Control-joint repair
The grooves in my concrete are crumbling and full of debris. Does that matter?
More than it looks like it should. Control joints exist so that the shrinkage cracking concrete does anyway happens in a straight line you chose rather than across the middle of the slab. A joint that has filled with debris or broken down at its edges stops doing that job.
It is small, unglamorous work that has a disproportionate effect on how a slab ages.
What the method is
A control joint is a deliberate weakness — tooled or saw-cut — that concentrates shrinkage stress so the crack forms there. Many are sealed to keep water and incompressible material out.
Repair means cleaning the joint out properly, repairing broken-down edges where the concrete has spalled, and resealing with a material that can accommodate the joint's movement.
Because joints move, the sealant choice matters more than it does for a static crack.
What it does not do
- It does not add joints where the original layout was inadequate, unless new joints are cut as a separate item.
- It does not repair cracks that have already formed elsewhere because the joints were not working.
- It does not stop the slab moving; it manages where the movement shows.
- It does not restore spalled joint edges to an invisible finish.
What you can safely check yourself
- Check whether joints are packed with grit, soil or vegetation. Incompressible material in a joint prevents it closing and can cause edge damage.
- Look at the joint edges for spalling, which indicates the joint has been taking compression it could not accommodate.
- Note whether cracks have formed parallel to and near a joint, which suggests the joint was not relieving as intended.
When professional evaluation matters more
- Cracking has formed beside joints rather than in them, suggesting the layout or spacing is inadequate
- Joint edges are spalling significantly, which can indicate compression the slab cannot accommodate
- Joints are open enough to admit water into the base
