Concrete demolition and disposal cost
How much of my replacement quote is just getting rid of the old concrete?
A meaningful share, and it is the part of the price with the least to do with concrete and the most to do with your street. Breaking out, loading, hauling and tipping are logistics, and logistics costs vary by location more than almost anything else in the job.
It is also the line item most often assumed rather than stated, which makes it a common source of surprise.
What it is
Demolition breaks the existing slab into pieces small enough to move. Reinforcement makes that slower, and thicker slabs slower still.
Removal covers getting broken concrete from where it is to a vehicle — by machine where access allows, by hand and barrow where it does not.
Disposal is haul distance plus tipping fees at a facility that accepts concrete, both of which are entirely local.
What seeing this cannot establish

What moves the number
No figures. This site publishes no prices because it has no sourced, dated pricing data, and a national average would be wrong on most streets. These are the variables to compare estimates against instead.

- Distance material must be carried by hand if machinery cannot reach
- Slab thickness, which affects breaking time directly
- Reinforcement — mesh or bar makes breaking and separating slower
- Total volume, which drives the number of loads
- Haul distance to a facility that accepts concrete
- Tipping fees, which vary widely by location and facility
- Whether the concrete can be crushed and reused on site, which can reduce haulage
- Protection of lawns, planting and adjacent surfaces during removal
- Whether any contamination is present, which can change disposal routes
Questions to ask whoever comes out
- Is demolition, removal and disposal included, and is it itemised?
- How will you get material out, and what protection is included for the lawn and planting?
- Can any of it be crushed and reused on site as base?
- What happens if the slab turns out thicker or more heavily reinforced than expected?
- Where is the material going, and is the tipping fee in the price?
Where estimates for this commonly differ in scope
These are the places two prices for apparently the same work stop being comparable.
- Disposal is included, itemised or excluded depending on the contractor, and "removal" sometimes means only moving it to your driveway.
- Protection of adjacent surfaces during removal is rarely specified and frequently the source of complaints.
- Thickness and reinforcement assumptions underlie the demolition price and are almost never stated.

Common questions
Can I save money by disposing of the concrete myself?
Sometimes, and it is worth asking. Broken concrete is heavy, most vehicles are not suitable, and facilities have their own acceptance rules and fees. Where it can work is if you have genuine use for it on site or access to a facility conveniently. Ask the contractor what the deduction would be before assuming it is worthwhile.
Why is disposal so expensive?
It is weight and distance. Concrete is dense, so a modest area produces a lot of tonnage, and every tonne has to be loaded, hauled and tipped at a facility that charges to accept it. Those costs are entirely local, which is why this line varies more between towns than most of the job does.
Can the old concrete be reused?
In some cases it can be crushed and used as base material on the same site, which reduces both haulage out and material in. Whether it is practical depends on the volume, the equipment available and whether the material is suitable. It is a reasonable question to put to a contractor rather than something to assume.
