Grinding vs lifting uneven concrete
One quote is to grind the lip and one is to lift the slab. They are very different prices.
They are also different outcomes. Grinding removes material from the high side until the lip is gone. Lifting raises the low side back towards where it was. Both eliminate the trip hazard; only one restores the slab's profile and therefore its drainage.
Which is right depends on why the concrete is uneven — and specifically on whether something dropped or something rose.
What it is
Grinding cuts the high side down with a diamond head, tapering the transition. Fast, inexpensive, often a single short visit.
Lifting injects material beneath the low side to raise it, filling the void and restoring elevation. More expensive, still far cheaper than replacement.
Grinding leaves a visibly lighter, smoother patch. Lifting leaves small patched holes.
What it does not do
- Neither repairs the concrete or addresses a failing surface.
- Neither rebuilds a base.
- Neither addresses the cause — a growing root, continuing frost cycles, an active water path.
- Neither is appropriate for a slab broken into many pieces.

What changes the answer
- Whether the displacement is from something rising or something settling — established with a level run across several panels
- Whether drainage across the joint matters
- Whether the slab sounds hollow, indicating a void that grinding will not address
- How thin the slab is
- Whether the cause is progressive, in which case a ground lip will return
The cheaper first number is not the cheaper decision. Grinding is genuinely the right answer often enough that it should not be dismissed as the cheap option — for a heaved panel where the movement has finished, it is proportionate and sufficient. Where it becomes false economy is on a settled slab with a void: the lip goes, the low spot stays, water starts collecting there, and the unsupported slab eventually cracks. Then you pay for the lifting anyway, on a slab that is now thinner and cracked.

- Does it sound hollow, and if so does grinding leave that unaddressed?
- Will grinding change where water goes at this joint?
- How thin is this slab, and does removing material matter?
- Is the cause still active, and how soon might a ground lip return?
Where estimates for this commonly differ in scope
These are the places two prices for apparently the same work stop being comparable.
- Estimates rarely say whether they concluded the slab rose or settled, which is the assumption underneath the whole recommendation.
- Void filling may or may not be in a lifting price.
- The number of joints or panels differs between estimates for the same walk.

Common questions
Is grinding just the cheap way out?
Not necessarily. For a panel pushed up by movement that has finished, grinding is proportionate and sufficient, and paying for lifting would be paying for something you do not need. It becomes false economy on a settled slab, where it removes the lip and leaves the low spot and the void.
How do I know if my slab settled or rose?
Run a long level or string line across several panels and photograph from the side, or compare the slab against something that has not moved such as a door threshold. A single joint cannot tell you, which is why estimates that skip this step are guessing at the thing that decides the method.
Can both be done?
Yes, and it is sometimes the right answer — lift the settled panel back and grind a small residual lip to get a clean transition. That combination is worth asking about where the lift cannot quite match an adjacent element.
