Concrete dusting

My garage floor produces fine dust no matter how much I sweep. Why?

Because you are not sweeping up dirt — you are removing the surface, and there is more of it underneath. Dusting means the top layer of the slab is weak enough to break down into powder under ordinary traffic.

It is one of the more solvable conditions in this library, and one of the most irritating to live with, which is a good combination.

What it is

A properly finished and cured concrete surface is dense and hard. A dusting surface is neither: the paste at the very top is friable and abrades to fine powder when walked on, driven on, or swept.

The powder is characteristically very fine and pale, and it reappears within days of cleaning. That recurrence is what distinguishes dusting from ordinary dirt or construction debris.

It is far more commonly an interior condition than an exterior one, because exterior slabs are usually cured by weather and washed by rain, while interior slabs are often placed and finished in conditions that do neither.

What seeing this cannot establish

  • Dusting concerns the top layer only and says essentially nothing about the strength of the slab beneath.
  • How thick the weak layer is cannot be determined by looking, and it determines whether grinding removes the problem or exposes more of it.
  • Dusting and efflorescence both produce a pale powder and are entirely different things. Efflorescence is mineral brought out by water; dusting is the surface abrading.

What this can be associated with

Candidate explanations, not findings. Nobody can establish which applies to your concrete without seeing it.

  • Curing that never happened or ended early, so the surface lost water before it gained strength
  • Finishing while bleed water was present, working excess water back into the surface
  • Placement in cold conditions, which can be associated with a surface that never developed properly
  • Carbonation of a green surface in an enclosed space with unvented heaters, which can be associated with a soft dusty layer
  • Excess water in the mix, reducing the strength of the paste at the surface

What you can safely check yourself

  • Rub a dark cloth firmly across the floor. A heavy pale deposit on the cloth confirms the surface is abrading rather than that the floor is dirty.
  • Scratch the surface with a coin or key. A soft surface marks easily and produces powder in the scratch.
  • Note whether the dust returns after cleaning, and how quickly. Recurrence within days is diagnostic.
  • Check whether it is worse in traffic paths, which indicates abrasion rather than deposition.
  • Taste and touch are not needed here, but note whether the powder is gritty or floury — dusting powder is characteristically fine.
  • Note the slab's age and, if you know, the season and conditions it was placed in.

When this is frequently cosmetic

  • Light dusting in a garage or utility space where the nuisance is tolerable and nothing is being stored that dust harms

When professional evaluation matters more

  • The dust is affecting stored items, vehicles, tools or air quality in a space you use
  • You plan to coat, tile or seal the floor, because nothing bonds reliably to a dusting surface
  • The surface is becoming visibly rougher over time as the weak layer abrades away
  • Dusting appears alongside pitting or surface loss, suggesting the weak layer is thick

Evidence worth having before you ask for estimates

Every item here is something you can produce without tools or risk, and every one of them makes an estimate more accurate.

  • A photograph of the cloth-rub test result
  • A note of how quickly dust returns after cleaning
  • A scratch test observation
  • The slab's age and placement conditions if known
  • Whether any sealer or coating has previously been applied and how it performed

Questions to ask whoever comes out

  • How thick do you think the weak layer is, and how are you judging that?
  • Are you proposing to remove the weak layer or to consolidate it, and what is the difference in outcome?
  • If a hardener or densifier is proposed, what happens if the weak layer is thicker than it penetrates?
  • If a coating is proposed, what preparation is included and what happens if it does not bond?
  • What guarantee is there that the dusting stops rather than reappears through the treatment?

Where estimates for this commonly differ in scope

These are the places two prices for apparently the same work stop being comparable.

  • Sealing, densifying, grinding and coating are four different responses to dusting with different costs and outcomes, and all get described as fixing a dusty floor.
  • Grinding removes the weak layer but generates its own dust and may expose aggregate — an appearance consequence rarely mentioned up front.
  • A coating estimate's value is almost entirely in the preparation, which is the line item most often summarised in three words.

Common questions

Will sealing stop my floor dusting?

Sometimes, and it depends on how thick the weak layer is. A densifier or penetrating treatment can harden a thin friable layer. Where the weak layer is thicker than the treatment penetrates, the surface continues to break down beneath whatever was applied. That thickness question is the one worth asking before buying a product.

Is dusting a sign the concrete is weak?

It indicates the top layer is weak, which is usually a curing or finishing story rather than a statement about the slab. A slab can dust at the surface and be entirely adequate structurally. That is genuinely reassuring, and it is also why grinding the weak layer off is a viable answer rather than a desperate one.

Why does the dust keep coming back?

Because you are removing surface material, not dirt, and there is more weak material underneath. Every sweep takes a little more of the friable layer away. That is also the clue that separates dusting from an ordinary dirty floor — real dirt does not regenerate within days.

Can I paint or coat over it?

Not directly, and this is the most common expensive mistake with a dusting floor. Coatings need to bond to sound concrete, and a friable surface gives them nothing to hold. The weak layer has to be removed or consolidated first; skipping that produces a coating that peels away carrying the dust with it.
