Concrete replacement and new flatwork
The concrete is past repairing, or you are putting in something new and want it to last.
Replacement means removing the existing concrete, preparing the ground beneath it, and pouring new. New flatwork means the same work without the removal. Both live or die on the parts nobody sees once the job is finished.
Homeowners tend to compare replacement quotes on price per square foot and finish. Those matter, but they are not what separates a driveway that lasts twenty-five years from one that cracks in its third winter. What separates them is base preparation, thickness, reinforcement, jointing and drainage — and those are exactly the items that vary most between quotes and are easiest to leave vague.
The base is the job
New concrete inherits the ground it is poured on. If the old slab settled because the fill beneath it was never properly compacted, and the new slab goes on the same fill, the new slab settles too — just later.
Proper preparation means removing unsuitable material, bringing in and compacting a base of appropriate depth, and confirming the result before any concrete arrives. A quote that says "remove and replace" without describing what happens in between is not describing the part of the job that decides the outcome.
Thickness, reinforcement and what they are for
Different uses call for different specifications, and a contractor should be able to say why they are proposing what they are proposing for your use rather than quoting a default.
Reinforcement — wire mesh, fibre, or reinforcing bar — does not stop concrete cracking. Concrete cracks; that is what it does. Reinforcement controls what happens after it cracks, holding the pieces in position so a crack stays a line rather than becoming a step. Where the reinforcement sits within the slab depth matters as much as whether it is there.
Control joints
Control joints are deliberate weak lines that decide where the concrete cracks, so it cracks somewhere chosen and straight rather than somewhere random and ugly. Their spacing, depth and timing all matter, and all three are common shortcuts.
A joint that is too shallow does not control anything. Joints spaced too far apart let the slab crack between them. Ask where the joints will go, how deep, and how soon after the pour they will be cut.
Water, again
New flatwork changes where water goes. A patio poured flat holds water; a driveway sloped the wrong way sends it toward the garage. Slope is a design decision made before the pour and effectively permanent afterwards.
Ask, specifically, where water will run once the work is done — and if the honest answer is "toward the house", ask what is being done about that.
When replacement is the realistic answer
- The concrete is broken into multiple pieces or crumbling through its depth.
- Damage covers most of the area rather than one section.
- Previous repairs have already been made and have not held.
- The slab is the wrong thickness or specification for how it is now being used.
- The layout or slope needs to change, which lifting and resurfacing cannot do.
When replacement is premature
- The slab is sound and has simply settled — lifting may achieve the same practical result for less.
- The damage is surface-level on structurally sound concrete — resurfacing may be enough.
- One panel of many has failed and the rest is fine — replacing that panel is not the same job as replacing the driveway.
- The underlying cause is unresolved drainage. New concrete on an unfixed cause fails the same way.
Alternatives worth pricing
- Leveling, where the concrete is intact and only the elevation is wrong.
- Partial replacement of the failed sections only.
- Resurfacing, where the structure is sound and the surface is not.
What moves the price
We do not publish national dollar figures. A single average applied across every site, method and market gives you a confident-looking benchmark that is wrong for your job in an unknown direction. What does transfer between jobs is the structure of the price:
- Square footage, thickness and the specified mix.
- Demolition and disposal volume — a thick, reinforced old slab costs more to remove than a thin one.
- Base work: how much material has to come out and how much has to go in.
- Access for trucks and equipment; a back garden patio is not a driveway apron.
- Reinforcement type, finish, and any decorative treatment.
- Site conditions and drainage work bundled into the scope.

What to ask a contractor
- What exactly are you doing to the base — how deep, what material, compacted how?
- What thickness, and what reinforcement, and why that specification for this use?
- Where will the control joints go, how deep, and how soon after the pour?
- Where will water run when this is finished?
- Is removal and disposal of the old concrete included?
- What is the cure schedule, and when can I use it — foot traffic and vehicles separately?
- What does the warranty cover, and does it exclude cracking?
Common questions
Can I pour new concrete over the old slab instead of removing it?
Sometimes, but it is a different job with different risks, and it raises the finished height — which matters at door thresholds, garage entries and against existing walkways. If the old slab is settling or broken, pouring over it inherits the problem. Ask why it is being proposed and what happens if the slab underneath keeps moving.
Will the new concrete crack?
Almost certainly, somewhere, eventually. That is normal and expected behaviour for concrete. Good work does not prevent cracking; it controls where cracks form, keeps them tight, and stops them becoming height differences. Be wary of anyone promising concrete that will not crack.
How long before I can park on a new driveway?
Longer than for foot traffic, and the specific answer depends on the mix, the conditions and the contractor's specification. Ask for both figures in writing before work starts. Driving on concrete early is a common way to damage a new slab.
Should I replace the whole driveway or just the bad panels?
It depends on why the bad panels failed. If they failed for a local reason — a trench, a downspout, a tree root — replacing those panels can be entirely reasonable. If they failed because the whole base is inadequate, partial replacement buys time rather than solving anything. A contractor should be able to tell you which they think it is, and why.
