Mudjacking vs polyurethane foam lifting
Two contractors want to lift my driveway with different materials. Does it matter which?
Both raise a settled slab by injecting material underneath it, and both are legitimate. The differences are physical — what the material weighs, how big a hole it needs, how it behaves in wet ground — and those differences favour one or the other depending on your site.
Anyone telling you one is simply better is selling rather than assessing.
What it is
Mudjacking injects a cementitious slurry through holes typically larger than those used for foam. The slurry fills the void and raises the slab hydraulically.
Foam lifting injects a two-component polyurethane through smaller holes. It reacts and expands in place, filling and then lifting.
The end result — a slab returned towards its intended elevation — is the same. What differs is the material sitting under your concrete afterwards.
What it does not do
- Neither repairs the concrete. Cracks stay cracks and a failing surface stays failing.
- Neither rebuilds a base or improves soil.
- Neither addresses the water that created the void, so recurrence is possible either way.
- Neither is a good answer for a slab broken into many independently moving pieces.

Where they genuinely overlap
- Both restore elevation to a sound slab that has moved as a unit, without demolition
- Both cost substantially less than replacing the same area
- Both leave visible patched holes in the surface
- Both are ineffective if the concrete itself has failed
- Both leave the cause of the settlement untouched unless drainage is separately addressed
What changes the answer
- Whether the soil beneath is weak or compressible, which weighs against adding a heavy material
- Whether the void is wet, which affects how a slurry behaves
- Whether the surface is decorative or highly visible, which makes hole size matter
- How quickly the surface must return to use
- Whether the contractor you trust more is better at one method — execution matters more than material choice on most residential slabs
The cheaper first number is not the cheaper decision. Neither material is usually what limits the repair's life. The cause is. A slab lifted by either method will settle again if water is still washing base material away, so the ten-year comparison is less about slurry versus foam and more about whether anybody addressed the drainage. Compare on that, and on which contractor gave you a straighter answer about the cause.

- Is the soil beneath weak enough that added weight is a consideration?
- Is the void wet, and does that affect your method?
- How will you control and verify the final elevation?
- What is being done about the cause, and is it in this price?

These are the places two prices for apparently the same work stop being comparable.
- Estimates for the two methods often cover different areas, so compare the marked extent, not just the price.
- Void filling and lifting may be priced together or separately.
- Drainage correction is usually excluded from both.

Common questions
Is foam lifting better than mudjacking?
Neither is universally better. Foam is lighter and uses smaller holes; slurry is a different cost and material profile. Which suits your slab depends on the soil, whether the void is wet, how visible the surface is and how fast you need it back. A contractor who says one is simply superior has stopped assessing.
Which lasts longer?
In most residential cases the material is not the limiting factor — the cause is. If water continues to remove base material, the slab settles again whichever was injected. That is why the drainage answer tells you more about durability than the material answer does.
Which is cheaper?
It varies by market, by access and by the volume needed, so we are not going to assert a general ranking. What is worth doing is comparing the marked extent each contractor is pricing, because differing area assumptions cause more price variation between these two methods than the materials do.
