Concrete replacement considerations

Replacement costs the most. What does it actually get me that repair does not?

Three things no repair can offer: a rebuilt base, a changed geometry, and a fresh service life on the whole element rather than a patch of it.

That is a real list, and it is why replacement is sometimes the better lifecycle decision despite the higher first number. It is also why replacement estimates vary so much — the parts that determine whether the new slab outlasts the old one are exactly the parts buried where nobody sees them.

What the method is

The existing concrete is broken out and removed, the base is prepared or rebuilt, reinforcement and joints are set out, and new concrete is placed, finished and cured.

The base and subgrade work is the part that most affects how long the new slab lasts and the part a homeowner will never see again. So is the joint layout, which determines where the new slab will crack.

Access, demolition and disposal are a meaningful share of the cost and vary enormously between sites.

What it does not do

  • It does not fix drainage beyond the slab. If water still arrives the same way, the new slab lives in the same conditions.
  • It does not guarantee no cracking. New concrete shrinks, and joints manage where it cracks rather than whether.
  • It does not address a structural question about something the slab sits against.
  • It is disruptive, and the new surface needs protecting while it cures.

What you can safely check yourself

  • Note what the existing drainage does, because that is what the new slab will face.
  • Note access constraints — gates, narrow paths, overhead wires — since they drive both demolition and placement cost.
  • Note every level the new slab must meet: thresholds, steps, existing walks, the street.

Questions to ask whoever comes out

  • What thickness, what reinforcement, and what base depth and material?
  • What is the joint layout, and why there?
  • What mix are you using, and is it appropriate for this climate and exposure?
  • How will it be cured and protected, and for how long?
  • Is demolition and disposal in the price, and who handles permits?
  • What fall are you building in, and how will you verify it?
  • What is excluded that I should expect to pay for separately?

Where estimates for this commonly differ in scope

These are the places two prices for apparently the same work stop being comparable.

  • Base preparation is the biggest hidden variable between replacement estimates and the one most worth pinning down in writing.
  • Thickness and reinforcement are often unstated, and both affect life.
  • Demolition, haul-away and disposal fees may be included, excluded, or itemised.
  • Curing and protection are rarely described though they affect surface durability.
  • Permit responsibility varies, particularly for anything in a right of way.

Usually worth planning a repair

Conditions in this band do not usually become emergencies, but they rarely improve on their own and repair costs tend to rise with the affected area.

Common questions

Is replacement always better than repair?

No. It is better when the base needs rebuilding, the geometry needs changing, or the element is failing in several ways at once. Where a sound slab has simply lost support or has a surface problem, replacement buys a new slab in the same conditions at several times the price of addressing what actually went wrong.

Why do replacement quotes vary so much?

Mostly because of things you cannot see: base depth and material, slab thickness, reinforcement, joint layout, curing, and what happens to the demolition debris. Two quotes describing "replace the driveway" can specify very different slabs. Asking each for those five numbers turns incomparable prices into comparable ones.

Will new concrete crack?

Some shrinkage cracking is an expected consequence of concrete drying. What good joint layout and reinforcement do is control where it happens and keep it fine, rather than prevent it entirely. A contractor who promises no cracking is promising something the material does not do.

How long before I can use it?

This depends on the mix, the weather and what you are using it for, so a contractor giving you a specific answer for your pour is more reliable than any general figure. What is worth asking about explicitly is protection during curing — and what happens if it rains or freezes shortly after placement.
