Concrete in the Birmingham metro
Birmingham's suburbs are described locally as being over the mountain, and that phrase is a literal description of the terrain rather than a figure of speech. Reaching much of this metro means crossing a ridge.
For concrete that matters more than almost anything else. A great deal of residential flatwork here sits on ground that was cut, filled and shaped to make a level place on a slope.
Why concrete moves in the Birmingham area
Slope is the defining regional characteristic. Where ground falls, surface water does not soak in evenly — it collects into paths, gathers speed and seeks the lowest route it can find. When part of that route runs beneath a slab rather than around it, the water carries fine material out of the base with it, and the slab is left spanning a space it was never built to cross. This mechanism operates everywhere, but grade is what supplies the energy.
Retaining follows directly from slope. A great many properties here hold ground back somewhere — a formal wall, a series of terraces, or simply a graded bank above a drive. Anything retaining ground is also managing the water behind it, and when that drainage stops working the ground moves before the structure shows anything. Bulging, tilting and opening joints are late symptoms of a process that began out of sight.
Freezing occurs here and can affect exposed surfaces, but as a broad regional generalisation it is not the leading driver of residential concrete problems the way it is in the northern markets on this platform. Saying that plainly matters more than sounding consistent: a homeowner inspecting for freeze damage in this metro is likely to be looking away from the mechanism actually affecting their property.

A rear patio on the low side can drop measurably while a front approach on the shallow side of the same cut has never shifted. That is not a mystery and it is not evidence of poor work; it is the geometry of the pad.
Housing across the ridge also tends toward larger lots with longer approaches, winding streets and, in the older suburban areas, very substantial tree canopy. Long approaches mean more flatwork per property and therefore a stronger case for partial rather than wholesale repair, while mature canopy means roots are a live factor in anything paved beneath it.

Why did one end of my patio drop and the other end not move at all?
On a hillside lot that is often the boundary between cut and filled ground. Creating a level pad on a slope means part of the platform sits on undisturbed ground and part on placed fill, and only the fill continues adjusting. It is the most common explanation for movement that stops abruptly partway across a slab, and it is geometry rather than a defect.
My retaining wall looks sound but the slab above it has moved. Related?
Frequently, yes. Anything holding ground back is also managing water behind it, and when that drainage fails the ground behind the structure shifts before the structure itself shows anything. A slab above it losing level is often the first visible sign. They should be assessed together rather than as separate jobs.
Is freeze damage a major concern for concrete here?
Less so than in the northern markets on this platform, and we would rather say that than repeat advice written for colder places. Freezing does occur and can affect exposed surfaces, but slope, water paths and the behaviour of graded ground are the more productive things to examine in this metro.
My driveway descends steeply. Does that change the repair?
It changes what a correct repair has to achieve.
