Control joints vs expansion joints
There are grooves in my concrete and soft strips between sections. Are those the same thing?
No, and the difference matters when something needs maintaining. A control joint is a deliberate line of weakness that decides where the slab cracks as it shrinks. An expansion joint is a real gap with compressible material that lets concrete grow and stops one element pressing on another.
Shrinkage versus growth; weakness versus gap. They fail differently and they need different work.
What it is
Control joints are tooled or saw-cut grooves, partial depth, spaced so shrinkage stress concentrates at them. The slab cracks along the groove instead of wandering.
Expansion joints are full-depth separations filled with compressible material, placed where a slab meets a wall, a step, a column, or concrete poured at a different time.
Both are usually sealed at the top against water and debris, which is where they look similar to a homeowner.
What it does not do
- Neither prevents cracking. Control joints decide where; expansion joints prevent force transfer.
- Neither can be added retrospectively without cutting work.
- Neither compensates for inadequate original layout.
- Neither is permanent maintenance-free detailing; sealants and fillers need renewing.

Where they genuinely overlap
- Both are usually sealed at the surface against water and debris
- Both need clearing of grit and vegetation as routine maintenance
- Both fail when packed with incompressible material
- Both are cheap to maintain and expensive to ignore
- Both look like lines in the concrete to an untrained eye
What changes the answer
- Where the joint is — across the slab field, or where the slab meets something else
- Whether it is partial or full depth
- Whether the filler is soft and compressible or a thin sealant
- Whether edges either side are crushing, which points at an expansion joint that cannot compress
- Whether cracking has formed beside a control joint, which points at inadequate spacing
The cheaper first number is not the cheaper decision. Both are among the cheapest maintenance items on a concrete surface and among the most expensive to neglect. A joint packed solid with grit stops functioning, and the movement it was accommodating goes into the concrete instead — showing up as spalled joint edges or cracking beside the joint. Clearing and resealing joints periodically costs very little against repairing the damage that follows.

- Which of my joints are control and which are expansion?
- Are the expansion joints still compressible, or have they packed solid?
- Is the control joint spacing appropriate for this slab?
- Are you replacing filler or only sealing the top?
- Do any joint edges need repairing before resealing?
Where estimates for this commonly differ in scope
These are the places two prices for apparently the same work stop being comparable.
- "Reseal the joints" can mean top-sealing only or full filler replacement, which are very different scopes.
- Cutting additional control joints where spacing is inadequate is separate work and rarely offered unprompted.
- Repairing spalled joint edges is usually a separate item.

Common questions
How do I tell which joints I have?
Location is the fastest clue. Regularly spaced grooves across the field of a slab are control joints. A separation where the slab meets a wall, a step, a column, or another pour is an expansion joint — and if there is a soft compressible strip in it, that confirms it.
Does it matter if I get them mixed up?
It matters when maintaining them. Filling an expansion joint with rigid material stops it compressing, so thermal growth transfers into the concrete and shows up as crushed or spalled joint edges. That is a real and avoidable form of damage.
Should joints be sealed or left open?
Sealing keeps water and incompressible debris out, which matters most in freeze-thaw climates and where salt is used. It is recurring maintenance rather than a permanent fix. Whichever you choose, keeping joints clear of packed grit and vegetation is the part that does most of the work.
