My retaining wall is leaning. Can a concrete contractor fix that?

Possibly, working from an engineer's assessment. A retaining wall is not flatwork — it holds back soil, which means it carries load, and the load increases dramatically when the soil behind it is saturated.

That is why this page points harder at an engineer than any other project page here, and why drainage behind the wall matters at least as much as the wall itself.

What it is

A retaining wall resists lateral pressure from the soil it holds. That pressure varies with soil type, height, slope above, any load near the top, and critically with how much water is in the soil.

Saturated soil exerts substantially more pressure than drained soil, which is why drainage behind a wall is a structural component rather than an accessory.

Movement usually shows as leaning, bulging, horizontal cracking, or the wall rotating forward at the top.

What seeing this cannot establish

  • This page cannot tell you whether your wall is safe. Height, reinforcement, footing, drainage and soil all bear on it and none are visible.
  • The absence of visible movement does not establish adequacy.
  • A wall that has moved and stopped and a wall still moving look identical at one point in time.
  • We cannot tell you what your jurisdiction specifies for wall height or permitting. That is a local question with a local answer.

What you can safely check yourself

  • Sight along the face of the wall from one end. Leaning and bulging are far more visible along the wall than square on.
  • Hold a plumb line or long level vertically against the face and photograph any gap.
  • Photograph the whole wall, then any cracking, noting whether it is horizontal.
  • Look for weep holes or drainage outlets and whether anything discharges from them after rain.
  • Note what is above the wall — a driveway, parked vehicles, a slope, a pool — since load at the top matters.
  • Note whether the ground behind stays wet, and where surface water goes.
  • Do not excavate behind the wall to investigate. Removing that soil changes the loading on a wall you already have questions about.

When professional evaluation matters more

  • Always for a leaning, bulging or horizontally cracked retaining wall — a licensed structural or geotechnical engineer rather than a repair quote
  • With more urgency if movement has increased between dated observations
  • With more urgency if the wall retains soil beneath a driveway, a structure, or anywhere people are
  • With more urgency after heavy rain, excavation, or a change in what loads the top

When replacement enters the conversation

  • Whether a wall is repaired, reinforced, rebuilt or replaced is an engineering determination. The assessment defines the options and contractors price the assessment.

Evidence worth having before you ask for estimates

Every item here is something you can produce without tools or risk, and every one of them makes an estimate more accurate.

  • Photographs sighting along the wall face
  • A plumb-line or level photograph showing any lean
  • Photographs of all cracking, with orientation noted
  • Dated measurements of any lean or crack, repeated later
  • Notes on drainage outlets and whether they run
  • Notes on what loads the ground above the wall

Questions to ask whoever comes out

  • Has an engineer assessed this wall? If not, that is the first call.
  • To an engineer — is the wall stable as it stands, and on what basis?
  • To an engineer — what drainage does the back of this wall need?
  • To a contractor — which parts of your scope come from the engineer's report?
  • To a contractor — what happens to the drainage behind the wall as part of this work?

Where estimates for this commonly differ in scope

These are the places two prices for apparently the same work stop being comparable.

  • Cosmetic repair, reinforcement and rebuilding are entirely different scopes all described as fixing a retaining wall.
  • Drainage behind the wall is a structural component and is frequently absent from a repair price.
  • Permit requirements for wall height vary locally and are often unaddressed.
  • A warranty on a wall repair may exclude movement, which is the thing you were worried about.

Worth arranging an evaluation promptly

Conditions in this band can be associated with movement or water paths that get more expensive the longer they run. That is a reason to book an evaluation, not a reason to panic.

Common questions

Do I need an engineer for a retaining wall?

For an existing wall that is leaning, bulging or cracked horizontally, an engineer's assessment before any repair quote is the recommendation we would make consistently. A wall holds back soil, the pressure rises sharply when that soil is wet, and neither the soil nor the wall's reinforcement is visible. That is genuinely outside what a website or a repair quote can determine.

Why does drainage matter so much behind a retaining wall?

Because saturated soil pushes considerably harder than drained soil. Drainage behind a wall is not a finishing touch, it is part of how the wall works. A wall repaired without addressing why the soil behind it stays wet is being asked to resist the same load that moved it.

Can I just push the wall back?

That is not a repair we would encourage anyone to pursue on the basis of a web page. Moving a wall that has rotated changes the loading and the soil behind it in ways that need to be understood first. This is squarely the case for having someone qualified look at it before anything is attempted.
