Concrete in Dublin, Ohio
Dublin's residential concrete is mostly mature suburban flatwork, placed during the decades that turned a small river settlement into one of the metro's larger suburbs.

What is different about concrete in Dublin
Much of the housing here went in during the 1980s and 1990s, which puts a lot of original flatwork at the point where accumulated weathering starts to matter as much as anything happening underneath. That is a different decision from the one facing the newest suburbs. There, the concrete is generally in good order and the argument is about the ground. Why does my concrete surface flake after only a few winters?
Early surface scaling usually points at how the concrete was placed and cured rather than at what has happened since. Excess water worked into the surface during finishing, finishing before bleed water has left, insufficient curing, or inadequate air entrainment in concrete that will be saturated and frozen all weaken the top layer. Freeze-thaw cycling and salt then do the rest.
Does being near the Scioto or Olentangy affect my concrete?
It can. Proximity to a watercourse changes how water moves across and through a property, and slopes down to a river valley behave differently from flat ground. That is a reason to mention it to a contractor assessing settlement, not a reason to expect a problem.
Who is responsible for the sidewalk in front of my house?
It depends which jurisdiction you are in, and adjoining ones differ. Columbus places maintenance and repair of the sidewalk, shared-use path and driveway entrance on the abutting property owner of record. Dublin repairs sidewalks itself unless the City Manager determines the adjacent owner or occupant caused the damage. Gahanna requires owner maintenance but offers a cost share to owners who stay in its programme. Upper Arlington places it on the owner while taking back damage from city street-tree roots, utility defects and curb ramps. How bad does a sidewalk offset have to be before Columbus makes me fix it?
Columbus City Code § 905.11 treats an offset, elevation difference, deterioration or spalling greater than one and one-half inches in depth within a sidewalk, shared-use path or driveway approach — or a cross slope of ten percent or more — as just cause for repair. That is a number you can measure yourself with a tape before anyone quotes you. It applies to Columbus; the suburbs set their own criteria.
